A blog about popular song by Mark Higgins.
It’s music meme time! Of course it is. I’ve been doing this on my Twitter but realised my blog was probably a better place. I’ve already done the first five, so I’ll collate them here and then we’ll start in earnest with the rest.
Essentially it’s a posting thirty songs for thirty different moods, feelings, memories. It’s taken from love & zombies, and it’s a fun way to write about music that isn’t new which I usually don’t do. The full list is:

day 02 – your least favorite song
day 03 – a song that makes you happy
day 04 – a song that makes you sad
day 05 – a song that reminds you of someone
day 06 – a song that reminds of you of somewhere
day 07 – a song that reminds you of a certain event
day 08 – a song that you know all the words to
day 09 – a song that you can dance to
day 10 – a song that makes you fall asleep

day 30 – your favorite song at this time last year
The lovely Kieron Gillen and the awful Matthew Sheret are doing it as well, so it’s worth checking out what they have to say as they’re proper posh writers and all. Anyway, here’s my first five.
01 Your Favourite Song
Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 (Youtube, audio only)
I think it’s difficult to sum up why this is my favourite song, a title which becomes difficult to even agree on from day to day. I think the fact it comes form one of my favourite albums ever, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, has a lot to do with it – it’s a song I listened to in my formative years, and there’s a lot of optimism in the beauty contained within. For a long time, I wished I’d been born in 1979 so I’d have been around for the Pumpkins at their prime – I can’t think of a better musical age to have lived in.
02 Your Least Favourite Song
Oasis – Roll With It (Youtube)
Dreadful sub-Beatles lyrics, dreadful sub-Status Quo music, dreadful everything. Everything hideous about Britpop (and all music) is contained within these four minutes.
03 A Song That Makes You Happy
S’Express – Theme From S’Express (Youtube)
I might have mentioned this a few times, lately. I am a man who has a bit of an obsession with that I consider to be the golden age of dance music, very specifically 1987-1993. Straight out of 1993 comes this tune, utilising about a million samples and kicking off with a countdown. A countdown, for crying out loud! And then those horn stabs! If this doesn’t make you want to dance like you have a problem in your trousers, there’s something wrong with you.
04 A Song That Makes You Sad
Blur – No Distance Left To Run (Youtube)
A beautiful, melancholy ballad about finally coming to terms that sometime, or someone, is gone. One to put on at three in the morning with only the sound of passing traffic for company, and have a good long think about your life. It’s going to be alright, really, no matter how hard it seems.
05 A Song That Reminds You Of Someone
Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. (Youtube)
I’ll never be able to listen to this without thinking of the very first time I heard it, and the place – in Matthew Sheret’s halls of residence in 2004. I don’t think I’d ever seen him so excited about a new song, and it took me a while to get it, but when I did it made sense. It’s somewhat similar to the first single from Plastic Beach, Stylo in that way, as it was the first track from Demon Days. It’s one of those tracks that will forever be rooted to that tiny central London room, sitting on Matt’s bed while he mentally urged me to love it.
And that’s the first five! Each subsequent article will be popping up individually on here with typically erudite and poorly proof-read commentary. If you feel like doing it yourself, grab the list and get blogging – pop a comment below so I can check yours out.
