30 Days of Music: 17 A Song You Hear Often On The Radio
Beach House – Zebra (Youtube, audio only)
It might not surprise you to know that I spend quite a lot of my time listening to BBC 6 Music. The main reason for this is that they play a lot of great music that you don’t hear anywhere else.
The second reason is that I’m fortunate enough to work there freelance, and that is very much the second reason. I was a fan long before I started working there, and I continue to be a fan to this day. Going into the studio to work on Shaun Keaveny, Lauren Laverne or Steve Lamcacq’s shows is always a pleasure and not something I take for granted.
So given that my job is also something I love, I spend a fair amount of time listening to the 6 Music playlist. As playlists go, it’s pretty diverse – currently you’re looking at Mos Def sitting alongsde Laura Marling, with Surfer Blood and Foals for good measure. You’ll never hear any of the playlist tracks more than three times a day, which is pretty diverse compared to most radio stations.
The track that I’m hearing and loving at the moment is Zebra by Beach House, though. It’s a beautiful, mournful but at the same time joyous track, and I really can’t hear it enough.
Oh, and if you’ve heard the rumours about the BBC thinking about closing 6 Music down and don’t agree with them one bit, you can head on over to the Save 6 Music site for how you can get your voice heard on the matter.
