30 Days of Music: 08 A Song That You Know All The Words To

Beastie Boys – Intergalactic (Youtube, audio only)

When I was fifteen, I had a bit of an obsession with the Beastie Boys, caused entirely by this song. Maybe it’s the robot voice repeating the same two words over and over, a tactic used to similar effect by Daft Punk on Robot Rock. But that’s not the issue here.

The issue is that I listened to this song so much that I know every word, and have done for the past nine years of my life. I’m pretty comfortable with that. I don’t even need the music – I will start rapping (badly) to this if you mention any of the items contained within. I’ve even been know to say “I like my sugar with coffee and cream” in cafés. It’s unstoppable.

If there’s a more satisfying break in any song ever than “…mmmm, DRAHP!” then I don’t know it and I don’t want to. And if you think I’m bluffing, I will waste a good three minutes of your time, any time you like, by reciting the whole thing. And I will fully love it.
