23 Jan 2010I do like a bit of Ellie Goulding, it has to be said. Despite the rampant overplaying that Under The Sheets received towards the end of last year, it was a great pop song.
Now that she’s only gone and come top of the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, everyone under the sun is predicting big things for her. I’m not so certain. Little Boots took that honour last year, and despite having in my view the superior album, didn’t get the same recognition that La Roux and Florence and the Machine did. Of the three, Ellie is closest to Little Boots, given that she’s making lovely pop music with a bit of trickery. There isn’t the etherial nature of Florence, or the electro chops and inability to actually sing of La Roux.
Regardless, this is a very well executed bit of pop, with some of the tricks we’ve heard from her before – the chopped up vocals at the beginning a nice little touch. Her debut album Lights comes out on the first of March – only then will we really be able to establish how good a year she’s going to have.
