Muse – Undisclosed Desires (Youtube)

Another Muse album, and invariably another new single. But wait! This one’s quite good!

The band’s come under a fair amount of criticism for The Resistance, which given that it’s a bit of a departure from their previous work is inevitable. Funny how things change – when they first hit the scene, they were roundly accused of being Radiohead copyists, a label unthinkable today.

Still, I rather like Undisclosed Desires, and it’s got a great performance based video with all sorts of cables and wires all over the shop. It’s a music technician’s dream! Assuming that same technician doesn’t have to entangle them all afterwards. Anyway, a nice bit of Ultravox-esque pop that’ll worm its way into your head. Just you wait!

Okay, so with this I think I can finally give up on the “But but but I miss Origin of Symmetry Muse” I’ve had for the last few albums. It’s a shame they’ve moved away from the stuff I loved but this at least seems to be nice enough on its own merits. (What I’ve heard of the album before this felt so cringe-worthily BOMBASTIC that I never managed to bring myself to buy it.)

I’ve always liked Muse best when showcasing awesome guitar and piano work, with a bit of fun synthiness, really. The more ‘Epic’/'LOOK MA WE HAVE AN ORCHESTRA’ stuff doesn’t do quite as much for me, fun as some of it is.

Loving the video for this one, cute enough song. Might have to get the album, as although it sounds nothing like what I think of when I think ‘Muse’, it could be interesting anyway and it’s different enough to not make me think “I wish this was like the older stuff”.
