To be honest, I was always more a fan of Frank Turner’s work when he was in the exemplary Million Dead, a post-hardcore bunch of troublemakers from the UK. Songs like I Am The Party, were on one level pretentious and the other the British answer to Refused, and I loved them unconditionally. Also they had a female bassist and she was very pretty. But mainly the Refused thing.
Consequently I hadn’t paid a great deal of attention to his solo career to date, until I heard The Road on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show, and it caught my attention. Admittedly it’s a pretty basic formula – a song about living the road with acoustic guitar and some clever lyrics, but it works nicely. Perhaps it’s because you don’t get songs like this much any more that it’s a bit refreshing.
