Editors – Papillon (Youtube)

To say I was surprised when I heard the new Editors track is something of an understatement. Until Tom Smith’s distinctive, Ian Curtis-esque vocals kick in, you could have sworn this was any number of elctro-indie bands. That’s not to say it’s jarring in its difference, mind.

As previously mentioned, the Joy Division comparisons have haunted Editors since they started, which is only understandable given the vocals and sound of their early work. Tracks from their last album such as Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors took them further away from such tags.

This new sound is something entirely different though, and it’s working well for them. It remains to be seen whether it can be maintained over an entire album, but for a first single it’s a breath of fresh air.
