This post originally featured the music video for Drumming Song, but as that’s been removed from Youtube you can have this lovely live version from Glastonbury instead.
I’ve been a fan of Florence and the Machine, or “FloMac” as no-one but me calls them, for some time now. In fact, I put Dog Days Are Over on my best of 2008 list. They’ve been around and hyped for so long that their debut album Lungs received a Barclaycard Mercury Prize nomination despite the album having only been out for two weeks, such was their ubiquity in the music press.
But never mind all that, because they’re really rather good. The Machine could probably feel a little hard done by, but it’s all about Florence Welch’s vocals – soaring and majestic in a way that doesn’t really deserve comparison with La Roux and Little boots as so many have. Rather, you’re looking at a Kate Bush-esque songstress here, and fortunately she’s got the tunes to back it up.
Drumming Song is easily the poppiest single to come from Lungs so far, and it’s been getting the radio plays you’d expect. The drums take centre stage as you might expect, meaning the song never really strays too far from the bombastic. The video’s pretty good as well – it’s pretty much what you’d get if Beyonce went to Goldsmith’s.
Seriously though, everyone’s going to be saying “FloMac “a month from now. Remember where you heard it first.
