Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy

I downloaded Friendly Fires’ eponymous debut album on the strength of Paris, which was doing the usual indie blog rounds. It’s a nice song, and certainly gets your attention, but it’s nothing like Skeleton Boy. There’s the standard bleeps and bloops, which are my favourite musical device in any scenario. On top of that you’ve got a slickly put-together set of sounds, guitar riffs and a vocalist who sits somewhere in between that dude from the Editors and every other indie singer going. It’s a nice sound.

They’ve re-redited it for radio, which I can’t say I’m a fan of as I enjoyed the slightly more angular styling of the album version. Either way, it’ll probably make you want to get up and dance. Or at least sway your hips in a vaguely indie style, if you’re into that sort of thing.

At the risk of sounding trite I can see big things for these guys – there’s another couple of guaranteed radio hits on the album and they’re attractive enough as bands go. Expect a few more radio edits as this album rolls along.
